Here is what the best apps today have in common

Right now, the best apps are are the ones with a killer visual experience. Think Instagram, Pinterest, Flipboard. Those apps sell themselves because they are just beautiful to look at.

Now you can put your app in the same league…

by using Gridlocked which gives you the ability to get the killer visual experience as those apps I just mentioned.

The best part of it is you can do that without having an elite team of designers that the big app publishing companies have on their payroll.

We are your elite designer squad, and you don’t have to pay us $30k a year for that privilege. Amazing, huh?

Here are some highlights of the Gridlocked theme

Gradient Navigation Bar

Get rid of the default iOS navigation bar and replace it with the blue gradient bar which comes with Gridlocked. This makes your app stand out because “default” stuff gets boring.

Grid View with Irregular Cells

Who says the rows of your Grid has to always start at the same place. Pinterest has pioneered the irregular cell design and it looks amazing on their site. Why can’t you have it in your app? Well now you can.

custom-ios-app-design-gridlocked-1

Table View with Self Sizing Cells

The cells in the Grid will resize themselves depending on the content in it. All you have to do is give it a hint of what the content will be and the cell will calculate its height.

Comments Table View

The flexibility that this template gives you is endless. Each cell can have a list of comments below it. Together with the “Share” and “Like” buttons, you can make your app social and get more engagement.

Customize as you wish

If for some reason you don’t like the sample cells we have given you, you can always add yours. The base element for all the cells is a UIView.

In effect, you can replace the cells with any view you want.

Hovering Detail View

We have implemented a detail view where you can display more data for your cells. Tapping on the dishes in the Food View will popup a detail view that hovers over the background view while the main view is dimmed out.

Kind of like an Alert View on steroids.

    Excellent theme,
i really like the assymetric style the grids have on the main view. I could use it on a new rss type app.
Keep up the good work Tope
    :)

Glad to know you like it, Konstantinos…. This could also work well for RSS-news type apps. I didn’t think of that. Would love to see it

      Had to Google that, LOL.

      Thanks..

Wow, I think that’s outstanding. The slight non-alignment achieves an impression of freedom from a grid, without making it a big mess. The paragraphs being farther from each other thanks to the non-alignment, they are more pleasant to read.

Ehm, you didn’t choose images of these stunning models because it makes the whole nicer to look at, did you? Naah, I didn’t think so.

    Anyway… nice work, very nice!

    #
    • tope says:

Yeah, inspired by Pinterest of course…

And the images of models, couldn’t do any harm :-)

And after I go back to read your email closer… you’d like to know my possible application ;)
Actually I have 2 in mind. One is just a personal “share my meals” with friends and family the other is
a summer camp picture app. I am a very noobie developer when it comes to IOS, but I’m a very seasoned developer for other platforms.

Love it. Try doing an iPhone component like this next!

Also I love the navigation bar for the smaller view that pops up! Genious!!!

    Thanks Tope!

  9. Alexandre says:

Looks wonderful. I would like to use it for a collection app, like for stamps.
I wonder how the grid works. Can you scroll vertically and is it as efficient as a table view ? I want to be able to handle thousands of items?
Also, is the design of the cell size dynamic ? I see in the screenshots that you have two sizes, but did you have to design the cell’s background twice ?
    I stop here for questions.
    Really great template

    #
    • tope says:

Thanks for your questions, Alexandre. Yes ,the cell size is dynamic and will fit to the items contained in it. You just have to give it a hint of how much it will contain.. images, number of comments etc.

You can scroll vertically of course, we haven’t tested it with thousands of items but you really shouldn’t load thousands of item at once .. even in a table view..

Good programming practice tip: Lazy-loading on demand is the key here..

It is nice to see a slick way to display pictures and information. I would love to use to create a LinkedIn application, so if you see someone you recognise but have forgotten their name. You can quickly scan through all of your connections and their photos and find their name.

    Many Thanks

    Jon

Agree with Bob: perfect paragraph alignment makes each item legible and attractive – thanks for that detail.
I’m developing a pinterest-type site for Infographics, so the navigation on the popup view makes additional visual detail and commenting much more inviting.
    Congratulations!

    #
    • tope says:

Infographics… Yes, that is going to be good implementation of this. Would love to see that.

  15. Oliver says:

Nice! I love the extremely subtle use of texture in an otherwise clean interface. Really lets the photos shine. Would be perfect for the craft/project sharing app that I’ve been working on; think Pinterest meets Instructables.

    Afternoon Tope

For a minute there, I thought the theme was called bend it like beckham.

This is a very nice theme – it is nicely laid out.

Question, for those of us that purchased the Blog Theme, could we use the RSS Feed to drive the data to this App ?

    Speak to you soon.

    Iain

    #
    • tope says:

It doesn’t come with RSS feed built in out of the box… but of course you can plug it in. Since you have access to the full source, there is no limit to what you could do with it.

    Great work Tope!
I would use the theme on my Fungi Foray app currently which is currently on the drawing board!

The look and feel would be so unique and perfect for my target users.

I would like to make it on one of my apps!
one is Food Advisor, that will start by fetching the user’s location and show him/her their current address and location on the map. Once the app detects the user enters a location known as a good area for Food, it will alert the user that it’s Food time!.
    other one is Fashion Advisor

    #
    • tope says:

Haha,,, food time is always good.
Good idea for a location based app. Well done.

Tope, everytime I get a mail from you, I really get excited, because the themes are excellent and of great output! As everyone commented, the theme is an outstanding and eye-catching one and I am sure many of us are excited to get the first hands-on experience. Besides all of these, what I like most, is the examples pictures you have put there. Girls and Food ! You know how to take the attention ;)

    Hi! Great design!

I have a quick question that isn’t really related to the design so much as to the sample project.

I was just wondering if anyone has put together any code to use XML coming in over the network rather than the NSDictionary contracted in the sample code as the data source for the grid that they might be willing to share?

I am looking to turn around a quick demo and it would be a great time saver! :)

Looking forward to new templates! Keep up the amazing work!

Any chance a version for iPhone is coming out?

    #
    • tope says:

Not at the moment though. I’m not sure how the grid system will work on an iPhone.

It will end up being just a table view and be underwhelming don’t you think?

      #
      • Oliver says:

The Pinterest iPhone app itself uses a small grid for the main view. It’s actually very compelling.
