Making a utility app? Then Chrome is for you. It is not a secret that nice utility apps are hard to design.

To get a convincing design, your app needs to simulate the metal look and feel.

That is where Chrome comes in.

It has an aluminium/chrome look and feel that makes your users think they are interacting with an actual device. Give them that authentic feeling and you get them raving and telling their friends about your app.

Chrome Calendar

The Calendar view uses an open-source component, Kal as its engine. We overlay a nice aluminium design over it.

To get the Calendar to work, it is as easy as setting the chrome background

1
self.view.backgroundColor = [UIColor colorWithPatternImage:[UIImage imageNamed:@"background.png"]];

And initialising the View controller

1
kal = [[KalViewController alloc] init];

And you are off to the races.

Functional Calculator

The Calculator View is also easy to implement in your app. We have even gone a step beyond delivering just a cool design to implement simple calculator functions (Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division).

Chrome And Glowing Switch

We know you love glowing controls. Especially after Gunmetal is a huge hit. We decided to add a tiny bit of glow to the UISwitch.

1
2
RCSwitchOnOff* offSwitch = [[RCSwitchOnOff alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(180, 40, 80, 36)];
[offSwitch setOn:NO];

To get the UISwitch to show up in your app, include these two lines of code.

Segment and Slider Controls

More Chrome elements are present in the app. Need sliders, segment controls, buttons? We have got you covered.

    This one’s very cool too. I don’t need the calendar or calculator, but the chrome/brushed aluminum elements are nice. It would be great to see iPad support.

    Very nice as usual. The sunken apperance of the Yes/No/Maybe buttons is the best I’ve seen. Very realistic. Now just have to think of a way to incorporate parts of it in spotaboo.

    To be useful is not enough… it has got to be beautiful!

    Good job Tope!

    I really like the switch and the slider!

    Very useful template.
    From this one, AppDesignVault is again exceeding the “just image design” limit, creating new user experiences. The date view is very painful and hard to code. To have an functional AND beatiful element is a key feature.
    I also liked the metal slider. Congrats!

    Enjoy Berlin…wish I could be there in my hometown. Anyway, I will check your new template and may I win the new one. What I always try to do is to keep individuell and don´t copy layouts. I´m sure the will work with your new template…Thanks Rene

    Looks great, I like how the buttons and backgrounds look. I’d definitely voice my agreement with whitneyapps about iPad support, I’d like to see landscape and portrait sized brushed metal artwork for iPhone and iPad at 1x and 2x.

    I love the brushed metal look. It almost looks like it matches the metal on the sides of the iPhone 4/4S or the back of the iPad.

    Another great theme, Although i can’t think of a use for this theme (yet!) I do like the elements that make it up, and thats what i love about App design vault, i might not necessarily design an app (or reskin an existing app) with the themes you provide, but it gives me a great starting point, and allows me to bring parts over to my apps, for example i’ve just used the loading bar with percent label inside in an app. It’s the fine details that make an app great and between your themes and blog it’s a tremendous reference and tool.
    Thank you!
    One thing i’d love to see in the blog, would be more on image creation, E.g icons, buttons within the app and background images, But whatever you blog, it’s always useful!

    Where is the ‘add to cart button’? I don’t see it anywhere on this page

  14. crask422@me.com says:

    Yep an add to cart button and premium code would seal the deal : ). Truly love those components they are going on my current app.

    Looks great! Hope you had a good time in Berlin. I’ve been there long ago when I was very young. I wonder Berlin Intercontinental is still there? It was the best hotel I’ve ever been. Oh I miss salty German crap soup!

    The theme definitely looks good in the screens above. When opening the project in Xcode, I was completely disappointed. The Yes/No/… buttons are pretty as long as you do not click on No or Maybe. Buttons to the left appear to suffer from a graphical glitch. All in all the theme is not as professional as most of the others. Text input look terrible. The text is pushed to the left border, the screenshot must have been taken with some spaces in front of the input …

    There is no iPad version. Tope, I hope that you improve on the design and keep up the quality of the previous designs in the future.

  18. Hartmut says:

    Tope’s team has improved on the design. Pressed Yes/No/… buttons and text input field look much better, now.

    Thanks for the quick fix. An iPad version would make me smile even more ;-) .

    Like the idea, but the example images has a lot of distortion i think (especially all the edges) hard to know if the real design has this (not so good) effect too.

    I _really_ like the real metal look on the to two lower “Button” buttons and wish for a whole theme with this real metal look! (More silver, than greyish)

    • tope says:

      Yes, the screenshots don’t do good justice to the template. I will try making some better ones that reflect the template more.

      Thanks for the feedback

    Unfortunately another beautiful template without landscape or iPad support ! Does not run with xcode 4.2 …

    #
    • tope says:

      Yes, we didn’t think this would be a good fit for an iPad app. Please download Xcode 4.5+, the sample project will run fine on that

    This is an impressive template, but there are two reasons I can’t use it: no iPad support and no custom table cell. Would you consider enhancing this template?
